The 5 Lesser-Known Uses Of Himalayan Salt

Silk Route Spice Company

This month, we’re going to delve a little deeper into some of the less common uses for the wonderfully versatile mineral - Himalayan salt.

The 5 Lesser-Known Uses:

1. Sports Drink

Whilst exercising your body perspires, so you lose electrolytes as well as water. This is why it’s important to replenish the body’s hydration levels not just with water, but with the essential minerals it has lost. Add 1/3 cup of fresh sugar cane juice and 1/2 teaspoon of pink Himalayan salt to 1 litre of water. Stir well and refrigerate until you’re ready to drink it after your workout.

2. Re-energise Aching Feet

A warm foot soak can be pure therapeutic bliss. When you add pink Himalayan salt, there are some fantastic health benefits too. The pink salt is anti-bacterial, so it’ll get rid of any nasties that might cause athletes foot or bad odour. The salt will also stimulate circulation, resettle the pH balance of your skin and reduce inflammation in tired, over-worked feet.

 3. Clearing Sinuses

Spring sees the start of the pollen season and, even if you don’t suffer from hay fever, your nasal passages will become lined with pollen dust which can cause irritation. Add Himalayan salt to your bath or simply sprinkle some into a bowl of hot water and breathe it in to flush out these spores that can cause allergies.

 4. A Rejuvenating Bath

Who doesn’t love a long soak in a hot bath? Believe it or not, soaking in just water can actually leave your skin dehydrated. Adding Himalayan salt to the water will provide your skin with replenishing minerals, which it can absorb whilst flushing out any toxins that may lie in your pores or dead skin.

 5. Salt lamps

In a world full of technology, there’s a lack of understanding about the harmful positive ions with which we fill our air. Every electrical device - from phones to televisions and kitchen appliances - is a source of positive ions, which pour out into the air and have a negative effect on our physical and emotional states. Salt lamps keep the air in a room purified by balancing out the surplus of positive ions. They’re much more cost-effective than air ionisers and offer more health benefits, such as counteractive measures against Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and respiratory difficulties.
